PWS celebrates landmark centenary
2009 is a very special year for PWS as it celebrates 100 years in business. This significant landmark in PWS history celebrates its legacy of innovation and achievement and at the same time offers the opportunity to define the companys development in the decades to come. The centenary coincides with the 1st anniversary of the new granite factory and the companys most dynamic and comprehensive product launch.

The fifth generation family business opened its doors in 1909 as an ironmonger and hardware distributor to engineering companies, joiners and builders merchants. Under the helm of Percy Stephenson, Great-Grandfather of current Chief Executive Mark Stephenson, the Darlington based business quickly grew to be a major employer in the area. The ladies in the family contributed greatly to the company, taking the business through the war years when the men were in military service. Since those difficult years PWS has flourished to become one of the leading players in the kitchen market today. Becoming the sole UK distributor for the three fascia manufacturers at the heart of the product offer was a momentous milestone for PWS. Mobilclan, 3B and Friul Intagli are also family businesses with successful and longstanding relationships with PWS.

Comments Mark Stephenson, The company has realised incredible growth over the last 100 years and looking forward we will continue to improve on the inherent tradition of product and service excellence that we are known for. Tracking the journey from high-street ironmonger to respected kitchen component distributor and worksurface manufacturer, our centenary allows us to focus on our achievements and underlines our longevity. Our history means a lot to the family, employees, the local community and customers alike. Essentially though, it is about looking ahead to what the future will bring, the opportunity to ask the important questions that will frame and shape our business in the future. The achievement is rewarding but it highlights that it is very much about continuous work in progress. I am confident that our product and service focus coupled with our dedicated employees and loyal customer base will continue to move PWS forward.

Since the 1980s PWS has been characterised by organic expansion through market innovation, creating design-led products matched with commercial appeal. Despite the current market conditions PWS are far from standing still, with product development continuing to be the key driving force within the business.

Comments John Stephenson, retired chairman, What our family business has accomplished in 100 years is nothing short of remarkable. Much of this is because we have been blessed with, and continue to have, such a committed team of employees. They have respected and maintained the fundamental principles on which my Grandfather set up the company.
